Patients suffering from pleural plaques caused by the inhalation of asbestos dust and fibres are hoping that their right to compensation which ended in (October 2007) will be overturned this summer. Following the governments’ consultation paper published in (July 2008) and the backing of ‘The Union of Construction Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT)’, 13 MPs and asbestos campaigners - pressure on ‘Jack Straw’ and Justice Minister ‘Bridget Prentice’ has been impelling in a bid to get the abolished claim for compensation changed.

 

Initially the ‘House of Lords’ rejected a claim for compensation based on the mere fact that pleural plaques were symptomless and therefore did not warrant compensation as an injury had not occurred. However – Asbestos compensation campaigners put forward their argument, addressing issues such as permanent irreversible scarring, respiratory problems, and the risk of secondary complications such as mesothelioma, which has clearly blighted the lives of sufferers.

 

Lord Chancellor ‘Jack Straw’ voiced the reasons for the delay this week – announcing that the complexities involved were taking longer than originally anticipated.
